SIGN OF THE TIMES - 2009
Written by Tim Firth
Directed by Peter Wilson
Designed by Morgan Large
Starring, Stephen Tompkinson and Tom Shaw

"Brilliant. A real treat. Not to be missed"

Frank Tollit puts up giant letters on the sides of buildings. From a forty foot 'IKEA' to a five foot 'Comet', Frank's been the master for thirty years. But in his heart, he always yearned to work with slightly smaller letters...novels. Spy novels, in fact. Stories of espionage, treachery, unexpected encounters in dangerous places, disasters, explosions and daring rescues. Problem is, they never felt authentic. That is, until the day Frank turned up for work and found all those things starting to happen for real. A comedy about a fifty-seven year old man of letters learning the greatest lesson in life - how to live happily ever after.
SIGN OF THE TIMES is a comedy that has undergo
ne considerable transformation. Previously it was titled Absolutely Frank, and that began as a one act play A Man Of Letters which was commissioned by Alan Ayckbourn and performed at the Stephen Joseph in 1991.

aStephen Tompkinson talks to the Liverpool Echo about Tim's writing and Sign of the Times prior to it's opening at the Playhouse.

“The stage version of CALENDAR GIRLS achieves the rare & pleasing feat of outstripping the film both in terms of heart & humour. One of the most enjoyable evenings recent theatre has produced” - Evening Standard
At first glance it should look like your classic WI calendar. Jams, cakes, sewing and all that. Except for one tiny thing...the ladies are not naked, they’re nude. Whats On Stage 2010 AwardA group of extraordinary women, members of a very ordinary WI, persuade one another to pose for a charity calendar with a difference.
Puzzling their husbands, mortifying their children and riding the wrath of the outraged WI, they achieve their goal of raising money for charity, but inadvertently spark a global phenomenon.
Adapted by Tim Firth from his smash-hit film of the same name, Calendar Girls is quirky, poignant and hilarious.
